Newly Formed Support Groups

AIDS: African-American Men's Support Network meets weekly for 8 weeks at a time for any African-American men who are HIV+ or living with AIDS.  They cover topics such as relationships, basics of HIV/AIDS, medications, access to care, and any other topic of interest to the members of the group. Transportation assistance is available.  For details, contact Randy at Metrolina AIDS Project at 704/333-1435 Monday through Friday 9-5.

ALS:  Caregivers Group is a group sponsored by the Carolina's Medical Center ALS Center for caregivers of loved ones with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease).  It's a small, informal meeting where people learn new stuff, share mutual support, and laugh.  For details, call a leader at 704/355-0784 Monday through Friday 9-4.

Cancer:  Parents of Children with Cancer provides an informal, small group for parents whose children have any form of cancer.  They gather to discuss shared issues, provide mutual support, and learn from each other.  To learn about their weekly morning meetings, call Kim at 704/355-1160 weekdays 8-5.

Cancer:  Rainbow of Hope is an informal dinner and support group for families who have children with cancer.  During meetings, a childlife specailist provides free programs for the patient or siblings.  For more about their monthly evening meetings, call Kathy at 704/355-3788 weekdays 8-4.

Cancer:  What Now? is a group for people with cancer and their families where they can discuss any relevant topic, re-evaluate priorities, and explore coping strategies.  It runs for 8 weeks at a time. For details about their weekly meetings, call 704/384-5223 weekdays 8:00-4:30.

Grief:  Bereaved Parents Support Group is a group sponsored by Hospice of Cabarrus for any parent who has lost a child to any cause at any age.  For details about their twice a month meetings in Concord, call Tom at 704/788-9434 weekdays 9-5.

Muscular Dystrophy:  The MD Support Group shares feelings and research updates monthly in the evenings (except December) for anyone affected by any form of MD.  That includes people with, as well as caregivers of and interested friends of people with diseases including muscular dystrophy, ALS, Duchenne's, Charcot-Marie-Tooth, Becker, Limb Girdle, etc.). For more info, call a staff member at the Muscular Dystrophy Association at 704/567-2912 in Charlotte weekdays 9-5.

Recovery:  Celebrate Recovery is a Christian 12 step program for people wanting to use a scriptual version of the original AA program.  There is a religious service preceding each meeting. Free daycare is available for children of all ages.  There are a variety of types of meetings (e.g., step study, discussion, etc.) available depending on demand.  For details, call Matthews United Methodist Church at 704/847-6261 weekdays 9-5.

Sensory Integration:  The Sensory Integration Dysfunction Support Group meets monthly for parents of children with what is now abbreviated DSI (to avoid confusion with Sudden Infant Death).  For details, call Colleen at 704/708-8536 weekdays 9-5.

Note: SupportWorks does not consider it a failure when a group stops meeting.  We encourage people to start new groups on a trial basis and continue to meet as long as they are productive, enjoyable, and have adequate participation.

SupportWorks is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization which helps people find or form support groups and research medical information.  Our skilled volunteers answer 704/331-9500 Monday through Thursday mornings; at other times Sophie (our voice information system) provides data on local support groups.  Our 325 page web site (www.supportworks.org) provides local and nationwide assistance.  We list self-help groups and free, profesionally-facilitated, nonprofit support groups, but does not endorse any specific group.
