Finding national and international support groups
.
Here are some web sites which index large numbers of national and international support groups.  Using them should shortcut your search for individual group websites or phone numbers.  If you know of index sites which should appear here, please e-mail SupportWorks.  Should you have any questions, feel free to call SupportWorks in Charlotte, NC at 704/331-9500 for personal assistance on any Monday through Thursday morning from 9 a.m. to noon Eastern time.
LinkThe Self-Help Sourcebook OnLine Index***   of 4

Part of a large mental health site, this is the most comprehensive listing of national support groups of all types that we could find.  The choice of a limited number of keywords and a type-in word search allows you flexibility in finding names, descriptions, addresses, phones, websites, and e-mail for any of the several hundred organizations in their list.  It was last updated in 2007.  (Last checked 12/3/2007; originally posted here 6/25/98.)

LinkThe Genetic Alliance (previously the Alliance of Genetic Support Groups)***of 4

It's simple; it's easy; it's thorough!  This site allows you to locate nonprofit organizations and support groups relating to genetic disorders.  You can look up organizations by any of more than 400 names of disorders or the actual names of more than 450 organizations.  There you'll find detailed information about services, how to contact them, and if it's present, a web site and e-mail address. They even include an alphabetic list of all their member organizations so you can use your edit/find command on your browser to locate individual words.  Do be careful; some of the organizations list themselves under "T" using the "The" of their organizational name.  Last checked 12/3/2007; originally posted here 6/22/98.

LinkNORD (National Organization for Rare Diseases) Database**of 4

This is a tricky to use type-in-word-search database which returns lists of internal and external links.  Be sure you know how to spell the name of the disease or organization correctly.  For example, RSD returns 2 entries and RSDS returns 9. Nonetheless, NORD's services are unique and helpful; you may wish to call them at 800/999-6673 if you wish to register in their patient database. There are two quick-to-read essays; the first section of both of them addresses how to find existing Internet groups.  The first is from the ever-popular Self-Help Sourcebook OnLine and the second is from Dr. John Grohol's Mental Health Page(s).  The latter is a bit more detailed; both are well-written and helpful.  Both last checked 12/3/2007; originally posted here 6/98.

This isn't discussed very often, but is an important consideration.  As Bill Cosby used to say about the New York subways, "There's a nut in every car."  Last checked 12/3/2007; originally posted here 6/98.
