RATING SYSTEM and CRITERIA

Rating system and criteria for evaluation of web links

	Barely adequate, but the only site we could find.
	Good, but has definite limitations.
	Excellent and worth your visit.
	A truly outstanding site. Rarely given out.

And now, the criteria

1. Authority and expertise

Does the author/sponsoring organization have the knowledge to write this site?

Is there a way to contact the author? Does the author respond?

Does the site refer to others who support or challenge its assertions?

Does the site have peer or professional reviewers?

2. Intent

Are the financial supporters of the site obvious?

Does site express or have political or financial agendas which interfere with use by the reader?

Does the site require the reader to provide private information (e.g., name, address, e-mail...) to use it?

3. Content

Is the site's intended audience clear and consistent?

Does the site provide links to other sites with comparable or otherwise useful information?

Does the site show an "update" date? Does that date appear to reflect information throughout the site?

Given the site's intent:

Is the information useful, accurate, unique and/or clearly written?

Is the site comprehensive?

Is the site consistent in quality?

Does the author document the sources of information?

4. Organization and ease of use

Does the home page give you:

An overview of the entire site?

A way to take advantage of all or any of the site?

Is the site organized in an intuitive way--i.e., is it easy and fun to explore?

Do you need additional software, Java scripts, etc. to enjoy the site?

Are the site's graphics and/or multimedia helpful, quick to load, and/or entertaining?

Our annotations attempt to include the following:
What's the site about in just a few words?
Who would gain what from viewing it?
What does it do unusually well?
Are there any really important negatives? .
