SECTION 1:  Support groups in Mecklenburg County
The Autism Society of America (local chapter)   (110, 767)
      The Autism Society of NC Charlotte Area Advocacy Office provides referral to the local support group as well as advocacy assistance for people with au tims of any age and their families for any problem relating to autism.  For details, call the office at 704/894-9678 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; be sure to leave a message if no one answers because they often work outside the office.  You may also want to check out the Autism Society of NC web site or the autism links lower on this page. The local chapter is currently developing its own web site.

SECTION 2: Nonprofit agencies in Mecklenburg County
South Central Division TEACCH   (767)
This is the local chapter of the statewide Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication-Handicapped Children.  The folks there provide a wide range of advocacy and educational interventions.  For more info, call the office at 342-6346 Monday through Thursday 8-5 or on Friday 8-noon or click here to check out the state organization's web site. ECAC (Exceptional Children's Assistance Center)    (1063,733,767)
      A private, nonprofit organization committed to improving the lives and education of children with or without special needs.  Started in 1983 by a group of parents and professionals, it has grown into an organization for parents of any child birth to age 21 years all over the state of NC.  ECAC's services include individual assistance with educational problems, referrals to appropriate services, parent advocacy workshops, a (free) lending library, assistance for members of minority populations, and free literature by mail on various topics.

United Way 2-1-1 (Information and Referral Services)   (138, all)
This service provides comprehensive data and referral assistance for nonprofit and government resources in the NC counties of Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Union, and Anson counties and in or near the city of Mooresville, NC.  If you are calling on a landline or residential phone in one of those counties, dial 2-1-1.  If that fails, if you are calling on a cell phone, or if you are calling from anywhere else in NC, call 866/744-7778.  For calls from out of NC, use their local number of 704/377-1100. Although they are open 24 hours a day, you may wish to call weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for non-emergency questions.

      Click here to view a well organized site originated by a father of a teen with autism.  It has grown to a listing of hundreds of autism organized very clearly and effectively.
