Iraqi (and other) War Family Support Groups

Iredell/North Mecklenburg: Military Family Support Group (1624, 757)

This group provides a social and support opportunity for families of those deployed anywhere in or out of the USA related to the Iraq War.  Sponsored by the American Red Cross, the social and support components each meet once a month.  They also provide VideoConnect--a service allowing a short digital movie to be sent to a serviceman or woman anywhere in the world.  For details about their evening meetings, call a leader of the group at the American Red Cross at 704/873-9751 (Statesville chapter) Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mecklenburg (South):  Mothers of Military Service Personnel  (1628, 757)
A warm and inclusive group for mothers of any person in military service. They have a special interest in military experience related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).   For details about their weekly evening meetings and other occasional activities near Ballantyne, call a leader of the group at 607-9824 Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to noon.

Mecklenburg and surrounding counties: Blue Star Mothers of America (Charlotte/Mooresville area chapter) (1724, 757)
This friendly and loving group provides mutual emotional support, lunch, cards, care packages, and whatever else seems appropriate for relatives (mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, spouses, etc.) of those in the military.  For details, call a leader of the group at 704/242-2075 anytime anyday or click here to e-mail her.  You can also check out their statewide website at www.bluestarmothersnc.org .

Americans Ex-Prisoners of War      (71, 757)

      A group of ex-prisoners of war in any conflict.  To learn about their monthly meetings, call a member of the group at 704/841-2174 Monday through Friday evenings from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Vet Center     (70,757)
      An agency offering counseling, therapy groups, and referral services for combat veterans and their families of the Vietnam era, Grenada, Lebanon, Panama, the Persian Gulf, Somolia, WWII, Korea, Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the global war on terrorism.  Therapy often helps families deal with issues of trauma, couples, and communication.  For more info, call 333-6107 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.   (Click for overview of Veterans resources)

United Way 2-1-1 (Information and Referral Services)   (138, all)
This service provides comprehensive data and referral assistance for nonprofit and government resources in the NC counties of Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Union, and Anson counties and in or near the city of Mooresville, NC.  If you are calling on a landline or residential phone in one of those counties, dial 2-1-1.  If that fails, if you are calling on a cell phone, or if you are calling from anywhere else in NC, call 866/744-7778.  For calls from out of NC, use their local number of 704/377-1100. Although they are open 24 hours a day, you may wish to call weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for non-emergency questions.
