Airplane Medical Transportation

American Cancer Society

Travel to and from medical services for people who have no other means of transportation.

American Red Cross

Travel to and from medical services for people who require little or no assistance walking and getting in and out of a car.  Because of limited resources, people who receive Medicaid or who have other means of transportation do not qualify for this service.

Free, though limited, transportation for cancer-related medical treatments.  Talk with Liz when you call.

Elderly Disabled Transportation Assistance Program (EDTAP)

Transportation as of January, 2005 for people going to and from kidney dialysis or cancer treatments within Mecklenburg County.  Cost is $1.50 each way, $3.00 round trip.  Funding for this service is limited so it may go in and out of service; it's sponsored by DSS. 

Elderly General Purpose Transportation (EGP)

Transportation for Mecklenburg County residents 60 years and older for medical and non-medical purposes.  Call to register and to make an appointment.   Cost is $1.50 each way, $3.00 round trip. Funding for this service is limited so it may go in and out of service; it's sponsored by DSS.

Occasional, limited transportation for people who have no other means of travel, but who require only limited assistance walking or getting in or out of a vehicle.  This assistance is for groceries, medical visits, etc.  You must have a professional referral to use this service.

Mecklenburg County Transportation

A variety of free or low cost transportation for people on Medicaid.  From time to time eligibility rules change and the ability of the service to take on clients may come and go.  As of this moment, this service was available for groups such as veterans, for anyone over 60, and for people with an incapacitating illness, but do call to find out the current rules. You must call at least 24 hours before you wish to be picked up.  Allow for an occasionally very long wait on the phone.

Rural General Transportation

Transportation for Mecklenburg County residents who reside outside of Charlotte.  This service is for adult (or child with an adult) who need transportation within the county for any legitimate reason; cost is $1.50 each way ($3.00 round trip).  Funding for this service is limited so the existence of this service may come and go; it's sponsored by DSS.

Medical transportation for seniors 55 or older who live in an area bounded by Independence Boulevard, W. T. Harris Boulevard, Plaza Road, and Hawthorne Lane (zips 28205, 28212, 28215, or 28227).

One-on-one volunteer-based medical and grocery transportation for seniors 65 or older living in or near the area bounded by South Boulevard, Independence, Boulevard, and Old Providence Road (all of zips 28203, 28204, 28207, 28209, 28211, parts of  28210, 28226, and a bit of 28270).

Medical or grocery transportation for seniors 55 and older living in or near Mint Hill or Pineville.  These include zips 28104, 28105, 28106, 28134, 28210, part of 28212, 28226, 28227, 28270, 28277, and part of 28273.

Special Transportation Service

Transportation by Charlotte Area Transit Authority (CATS) for people in Charlotte, Matthews, Mint Hill, and Pineville with a significant mental or physical challenge who are unable to use the bus system. Be sure to call at least 5 days ahead of time; cost is $1.60 each way.
