| Depending on availability of donations and volunteer attorneys, these
sister organizations provide free legal assistance (excluding court costs
and some other expenses) for low income residents of the region in areas
such as public benefits (Work First, food stamps, Medicaid, etc.), housing
(evictions, tenants rights, utilities, foreclosures), consumer law (bankruptcies,
debts, used car problems), health (nursing home problems, access to health
care, AIDS issues, healthcare power of attorney), and family law (domestic
violence, child custody, simple wills), but not criminal or traffic cases.
This organization has now merged with Legal Services for the Elderly.
They provide free legal assistance for anyone age 60 and older who lives
in Mecklenburg or surrounding counties. Typical problems include
powers of attorney, guardianships, government benefits (e.g., medicaid
denials, food stamp cutbacks, social security), deed changes, consumer
disputes, insurance problems, landlord/tenant disputes, debt problems,
estates, uncontested divorces/custody, and other civil legal problems but
not personal injury or criminal cases. |
